  Etymology of first names What does your character's name mean? This site also provides the history of a name. It includes names from many languages.
  Online Etymological Dictionary This site can be used for several purposes. It not only provides the source of a word, it gives dates. It you are writing a historical novel, then you can make sure the word existed at the time of your book before you use it.
  Fictional Character Name Generator
This website is fun to play with. All you have to do is click on the male or female button to get a name, first and last. Here are two examples: Trevin Wostfoot and Scarlet Frelfly. It is great for people who want a fictional sounding name.

  American Memory American Memory from the Library of Congress provides free and open access through the Internet to written and spoken words, sound recordings, still and moving images, prints, maps, and sheet music that document the American experience.
  American Fact Finder The U.S. Census Bureau provides this Website. It offers information about population and much more that could be useful when researching a book. You can type in a city and find breakdowns by gender, age, race, income, education, etc.
  AltaVista Babel Fish Translation Use this site to translate words and phrases from one language to another.
  Movie/TV Database Look up movies and actors.
  National Punctuation Day Started and used by children, adults will also find excellent help on the use of punctuation. National Punctuation Day is September 24, but the website is available all year.
  Cliché Finder Helps keep your writing free of clichés.
  Information Please: Year By Year To find information about important events in history. Can select by year or decade from 1900 to current year.
Online Reources Writer's Digest University Formerly called Writer's Online Workshops. I have completed five of these courses, and highly recommend this approach to learning to write.
  Publisher's Marketplace A website with emphasis on selling your work to publishers. There are some benefits available free, but for most benefits you must pay $20 per month. If you have your own website you probably don't need the paid version of this.
  YouWriteOn.com A free website to help new writers develop, and to help talented writers get noticed and published. You review and rate another members opening chapters and then your opening chapters are sent randomly to another member to review and rate.
  Sally Stuart's Christian Writers Market Guide This Christian Market Guide is updated in December each year. Some of the information about Christian market is available online.
  FictionAddiction.net Contains a multitude of information about fiction for both writers and readers.

  WritersMarket.com This is an online version of the annual Writers' Market book published by Writers Digest. There is a membership fee, but it is useful for those looking for publishers.

  About's Freelance Writing About.com offers a variety of information about many topics. This one is about freelance writing. It includes how-to articles as well as writing opportunites.

  Contest Divas This blog is to inform you of romance writing contests, upcoming deadlines, finalists, winners, anything to do with entering writing contests. Most of the contests are sponsored by Romance Writers of America Chapters, but a few are not. Can a man be a diva?
  Christian Manuscript Submission Services A service of the Evangelical Christian Publishers Association (ECPA). Provides member publishers a way to look for good authors. There is a fee of $98 to post proposals for six months. I'm not recommending this and you should check it out before paying that much money.

  Writers' League of Texas The Writers' League of Texas mission is to promote literacy and elevate the art of writing. Annual contests and conferences.
  SouthWest Writers Nonprofit organization devoted to helping published and unpublished writers improve their craft and further their careers. Located in Albuquerque, New Mexico, serves writers of all ages across the nation in every fiction and non-fiction genre. They have a great contest each year.
